Traditional Taekwondo is the cultivation of discipline, respect, and integrity. The practice of traditional forms (known as "poomsae") is a cornerstone, allowing practitioners to perfect their techniques and movements.

Five Tenets Of Taekwondo

  1. Integrity (Yom Chi):

    • Definition: Integrity in Taekwondo refers to the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. It involves doing what is right, even when no one is watching. Practitioners of Taekwondo are encouraged to uphold honesty, sincerity, and a sense of honor in all aspects of their lives.

  2. Perseverance (In Nae):

    • Definition: Perseverance is the quality of steadfastly continuing on a course of action, no matter the difficulties or obstacles faced. In Taekwondo, it signifies the determination to overcome challenges and to never give up, whether in training or in life.

  3. Self Control (Guk Gi):

    • Definition: Self control involves the ability to govern one's own actions, emotions, and impulses. It emphasizes maintaining composure, even in high-stress situations. In Taekwondo, self control is crucial in order to execute techniques with precision and to avoid using one's skills recklessly.

  4. Courtesy (Ye Ui):

    • Definition: Courtesy in Taekwondo involves showing respect, politeness, and consideration towards others. It is about treating others with kindness and consideration, both within the dojang (training area) and in everyday interactions. Practitioners are taught to be courteous to their instructors, fellow students, and all individuals they encounter.

  5. Indomitable Spirit (Baekjul Boolgool):

    • Definition: Indomitable spirit is the unwavering inner strength and resilience to face challenges with courage and determination. It signifies the ability to stand firm in the face of adversity and to never be defeated, both physically and mentally. In Taekwondo, having an indomitable spirit is a cornerstone for achieving personal growth and success.
